High Voltage Line Inspection Training Simulator [VR]

Product Description

This Virtual Reality Training Simulator enables the trainee to inspect a virtual transmission line, before graduating to real-life inspections.

All the separate parts of a transmission line and transmission tower were modelled, including good and defective parts. At the beginning of a training session the computer randomly selects a set of parts (good and defective), and assembles virtual transmission lines and towers with it. The trainee line patrolman can now inspect these virtual lines and towers. Defective parts must be identified, logged and categorized. A database of trainee proficiency is maintained.

The simulator may be operated in one of the following modes:

Immersive Virtual Reality
The trainee views the environment with a Head Mounted Display (HMD) and navigates ('walks') through the virtual world by means of a Space Controller. The space controller is similar to a normal joystick, except that it does not have a base (also referred to as a baseless joystick).

Desktop Virtual Reality
The trainee views the environment on a normal Computer Screen, and navigates ('walks') through the virtual world by means of a Computer Mouse or a Joystick.

The system generates a random number of virtual transmission towers that need to be inspected. The towers (and the spans between them) consist of good and defective parts. The trainee needs to identify, log and categorize the defective parts.
The Virtual Transmission Line
The virtual transmission tower consists of randomly chosen, good and defective parts.
Virtual Transmission Tower
When an error has been detected, a button is pressed on the space controller (or computer mouse). The main error category menu will be superimposed over the view of the environment. When the trainee looks up and down, his/her head movement is tracked with a head tracker. This head movement scrolls the error category menu. When a certain category is highlighted, the trainee may look to the right to select a sub category for the error. When the suspected error has been identified (by scrolling the menus with head movement), the select button on the space controller is pressed, and the identified error is recorded.

In this case a 'loose earth strap' has been selected under the 'towers' error category.
Close-up of Transmission Tower
The trainee may select a magnified view, as if seen with binoculars. In this case a 'bird nest' has been identified, under the 'towers' error category.
