Gastroscope Training Simulator

Gastroscope Training Simulator

Product Description

This system enables the trainee specialist to develop, exercise and sharpen his/her gastroscope navigational, procedural and therapeutic skills on a virtual patient. The system includes a physical transparent force-feedback model, as well as a computer graphics model, of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. A real gastroscope is inserted into the physical model. The gastroscope tip is tracked continuously in 6 degrees of freedom (6 DOF). The host computer interprets the 6 DOF data and renders the image that would be been seen with a real gastroscope in a real patient. Therapeutic skills like biopsy sampling may also be simulated. The system is capable of simulating difficult procedures like ERCP.

A real endoscope is used for maximum realism. this endoscope is instrumented to interface with the host computer (background). The tip of the endoscope is tracked with a tracking system (bottom right). The transparent silicone rubber force-feedback model is shown in the foreground. Once the student has mastered basic endoscope navigation, the transparent model is covered with a cloak.

The endoscope tip visualizer shows the trainee endoscopist the position and orientation of the endoscope tip within the virtual esophagus, stomach or duodenum.

This module helps the student to develop biopsy skills. A real biopsy tool is used, and its movement in the biopsy channel is tracked. A simulated biopsy tool is shown in the image.

The pathology generator enables the instructor to create realistic three-dimensional [3-d] pathologies. These may be placed at any point in the virtual esophagus, stomach or duodenum. The instructor can therefore
Pathology Generator
Once the trainee endoscopist has mastered basic endoscope navigation, the transparent model is covered with a cloak. The student now has to rely solely on the image on the screen, exactly as with a real patient.
Transparent Force-feedback Model (Covered with a cloak)
A standard gastroscope is instrumented with a tracking sensor at the tip, and a movement sensor at the insertion opening of the biopsy channel. The tracking sensor tracks the position and orientation of the gastroscope tip. The movement sensor tracks the relative insertion depth of the inserted biopsy tool. The data from these sensors is relayed to the host computer. The instrumented gastroscope is inserted into a life-size transparent silicone rubber force-feedback model of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. The computer contains a three-dimensional (3-d) computer graphics model of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. With the position and orientation of the front tip known, the computer now calculates the image that would have been seen with a gastroscope in a real patient. This image is displayed on the computer screen. The insertion depth of the biopsy tool is tracked similarly, and a simulated biopsy tool is shown in the image.
