Ascension miniBIRD 800® / miniBIRD 500®

Ascension miniBIRD

Product Description

miniBIRD measures the real-time position and orientation (six degrees of freedom) of one or more miniaturized sensors. It lets you accurately track the spatial location of probes, instruments, and other devices. Sensors are small enough for both external and internal use.
There are two models available:
Model 800 - 8mm sensors. Available with both serial and ISA - bus interfaces. The ISA card version now simultaneously tracks two sensors per card. This models dimensions are 18mm x 8mm x 8mm.
Model 500 - 5mm sensors. Beta units available Q1, 2001, with a serial interface to your host computer. Designed especially for use with endoscopes and laproscopes. Now available for beta testing. This models dimensions are 10mm x 5mm x 5mm.

The DC magnetic fields avoid blocking problems and yield reduced distortion from nearby conductive metals. Signals pass through the human body without attenuation. Mini sensors may be inserted into a body cavity to accurately record instantaneous position and orientation. Accuracy is unaffected by mounting mini sensors on ultrasound scanheads or non-magnetic stainless-steel instruments.

miniBIRD collects the spatial data necessary for accurate 3D reconstruction of ultrasound images of the heart, blood vessels, stomach, and other organs. In conjunction with ultrasound devices, it offers non-invasive, radiation-free imaging.

In one major new application, its sensors continuously monitor the descent of the fetal head during human labor to optimize outcome while minimizing C-sections. Dual mini sensors are used for differential readings of anatomical structures and for tracking multiple instruments. These approaches provide accurate volume measurements and precise navigation inside the body. For example, miniBIRD ensures that biopsy needles reach their target by correlating needle orientation with ultrasound imagery.

Features

Tiny sensors for insertion in the body
