This system enables the trainee specialist to develop, exercise and sharpen his/her bronchoscope navigational, procedural and therapeutic skills on a virtual patient. The system includes a physical transparent force-feedback model, as well as a computer graphics model, of the lungs. A real bronchoscope is inserted into the physical model. The bronchoscope tip is tracked continuously in 6 degrees of freedom (6 DOF). The host computer interprets the 6 DOF data and renders the image that would be been seen with a real bronchoscope in a real patient. Therapeutic skills like biopsy sampling may also be simulated.
